My family recently bought a boat–a motor boat. Initially, I was against this: stinky motor polluting the pretty lake, expensive dockside gas fill-ups, the hassle of putting it in and taking it out, never-ending requests from the eight-year-old to go tubing… A book on the beach for me, thanks.
However, the boat has also given us freedom of the lake in ways I never quite grasped before. Along beautiful Cayuga–longest and loveliest of the Finger Lakes in Central New York State, the lake I grew up on and where my family vacations every summer–you can dock at restaurants, ice cream shops, wineries, Aurora, Ithaca, and the numerous lakeside State Parks. It’s actually pretty fantastic and I’ve been won over.
On our trip this August, we took a ride to Wolffy’s Grill & Marina in Seneca Falls, NY, on the western side of the lake. With enough slips to accommodate about 30 boats, it’s easy to cruise in for a casual meal on the deck overlooking the lake. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner–including a kid’s menu, feature daily food and drink specials, and live entertainment weekly from mid-May to mid-September. Our family of five went on this outing and everyone was very happy with the food and atmosphere. We saw several dinner dates, a big family group with kids, and a (more boisterous group) that had been out along The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail.
And, the full moon over the east side of the lake on the way home was spectacular. We’ll certainly be back next summer.
